The Army Reserve is one step closer

TWINSBURG - The Army Reserve is one step closer to bringing a $24 million training base to town, after receiving building plan approval from the Department of Defense. More than a year ago it was announced the military was looking to combine five area Reserve bases into one new facility on a 24-acre Chamberlin Road plot. Some city officials have balked at the plan, saying because the federal government is exempt from property tax, the base would bring little tax revenue to the potentially lucrative industrially zoned property. Mayor Katherine Procop says a proposal to have the Fed lease the land, and still pay property tax, was rejected. She said she plans to request the Army pay the city for regular services like police, fire and road maintenance through an existing federal program, but won't ask until a property deal is finalized.
